Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some commonly asked questions from our clients. If you have any other questions, we’re always happy to answer; please email us directly!

What is an acupuncturist’s training?

Daniel is a Nationally Board Certified by the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine). Acupuncturist are required to have a minimum of 3 years post-graduate studies in Acupuncture at a school that is recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM).

Are there different types of acupuncture?

Yes, there are. Acupuncture originated in China but has spread to Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Europe, the British Isles, and America. In different countries and in various clinics throughout the United States many different styles are used based on differing interpretations of the classic Chinese medical theory and techniques. Some experienced practitioners have developed their own unique forms of practice. No matter what style is used, the mission is the same: to provide better health via a minimally-invasive, safe, and virtually pain-free method.

Does it hurt?

Many patients report that they do not feel the needle insertion or some may feel a sensation similar to a dull or heavy sensation. This is your “Qi” or Vital Energy and is an indication of enhanced energy flow, and it is important part of the process. Alleviating blockages in the body is one way to improve healing. The classical text suggests that a sensation needs to be felt for the healing to take place, but everyone is different. Lack of sleep and dehydration can make the body more sensitive to the needles.

Acupuncture needles are solid, hair-thin and do not have the characteristic bevel that can cause pain when having your blood drawn. Depending on the practitioner’s preference, either a non-insertive needle technique or extremely superficial needle insertions can be used during a treatment. The needles used are ultra-thin and made of either silver or stainless steel. Most people find acupuncture very relaxing. In fact, you may even fall asleep during your treatment!

How many needles do you use?

Treatments vary based upon your condition. The beauty and complexity of acupuncture is that there is more than one way to approach a treatment.

Is it safe? Do you use sterilized needles?

Yes, our needles are sterile, used only once, and properly disposed – we never reuse needles. Magnus Wellness uses FDA-approved, single-use needles that have been sterilized by the manufacturer prior to packaging. After your treatment, the needles are disposed of in a “Sharps” medical waste disposal container. Acupuncturists are nationally certified in Clean Needle Technique by the CCAOM (Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine). CCAOM is the only national organization that certifies practitioners in Clean Needle Technique for acupuncture. Clean Needle Technique is the standard way in which acupuncture is practiced in order to keep patients and practitioners safe.

What should I expect during a session?

The first visit is typically an hour; follow-up visits are approximately 55 minutes. During the initial visit you will meet with your acupuncturist privately in a consultation room to review your medical history and the main reason for coming.

After your intake, you will proceed into the treatment room, remove your shoes & socks, and get comfortable on a treatment table. The acupuncturist will come in shortly after. In some case for specific ailments or disorders, it is necessary to remove additional clothing, and sheets or gowns will be provided.

To begin a treatment, your practitioner will decide where to place the needles. This decision will be based on your constitution and your main complaint. Each treatment is highly customized for you and your specific health concern.

Each time you receive a treatment, the points may or may not vary.

What do I wear for my first visit?

You should wear or bring something comfortable (e.g. sweatpants, a comfortable T-shirt, shorts, etc.) for your acupuncture appointment. Avoid eating or drinking anything that stains the tongue before your visit. For those patients receiving Cosmetic treatments, be prepared to remove make-up before the treatment, and bring sunscreen to protect the skin after treatments. We will typically ask that bracelets and watches be removed, so you may want to keep jewelry to a minimum.

How do I prepare for my treatment?

Try to arrive on time or a little early to be sure your entire experience is soothing. It is best to have a light meal prior to your appointment.

How can I get the greatest benefits from acupuncture?

To achieve the greatest benefits, it is important to follow a consistent treatment plan that your acupuncturist will develop specifically for you and with you. The treatment plan will be outlined at your first visit and refined as your acupuncturist observes your response to care. The treatment plan will encompass your presenting symptoms along with both your short-term and long-term goals.

Rest assured, the positive effects of acupuncture can typically begin right after your first visit. However, acupuncture is a therapy and consistent treatments allow for your healing to progress more quickly. Generally speaking, your therapy is designed such that you are treated more frequently at the beginning of your therapy and then once your symptoms decrease, your treatment become more infrequent until you will be on a maintenance schedule. The maintenance program is unique to each patient.

Our goal is to have you come in before a symptom becomes a health issue. Please call if you have any questions on how acupuncture can help your health.

How do I schedule my appointments?

We use UnifiedPractice to schedule appointments. Click the link below to schedule an online appointment, or call us at 347-855-4116. Our SERVICES page on this website explains the appointment process in more detail.

It is best to schedule several visits in advance to hold your favorite appointment times.

What is your Cancellation Policy?

If you need to cancel appointments we ask that you give at least 24 hour notice so that we may give that time to other patients. If a patient fails to give adequate notice or continues to no-show, the price of the treatment will be charged to the patient’s account.

Be sure to reschedule promptly to ensure that you’re achieving your health goals.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of treatments depends on your symptoms, condition, life style, medical history, and age. The frequency of treatments also affects your outcome. Based on these factors, we will determine how many treatments are necessary for your specific case. Some people notice a difference immediately; others will notice changes within 6-12 treatments.

We ask you to be patient and to make a commitment to your Acupuncture treatment plan and, of course, to set realistic expectations. With acupuncture, the effectiveness of each treatment typically builds upon the previous one – Acupuncture is a medical therapy. Acute conditions tend to resolve more quickly with an intensive series of treatments, whereas chronic conditions may require a longer and more consistent series. The number of required visits is also determined by the severity and cause of the health concern. Once significant changes have been made, maintenance treatments may or may not be needed. Depending on the particular condition and the patient’s age, this may result in a treatment every one to three months to prevent a relapse of symptoms.

At Magnus Wellness, we will check your progress throughout the course of your treatments and will communicate clearly what you may expect in terms of results and time-frames. We will provide you with an accurate prognosis and refer you to another healthcare practitioner if we are unable to meet your needs.

Do I have to do acupuncture forever for my condition?

Once an individual is symptom-free, it can be beneficial to establish a plan to maintain good health. An example of a preventive maintenance schedule is a visit to Magnus Wellness bimonthly, monthly or seasonally depending upon your particular condition.

Where do you put the needles?

Needles are typically placed in areas from the elbows to the fingers, knees to toes, and head and scalp. There are times that needles will be placed in other locations, including the abdomen, back, hip or neck area. Loose fitting clothing allows your acupuncturist to reach the areas necessary – it is advisable to bring shorts with you to change into before your treatment. Patient discretion is never compromised and treatments can be modified to meet your needs. The beauty of acupuncture is that it can be flexible; there are many points and approaches to choose from.

How long is a treatment?

Acupuncture treatments typically last from 55 minutes. First time patients should allow sufficient time to complete their initial consultation. If you have not completed your paperwork in advance we ask that you please arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete the intake form and to foster a relaxing experience.

What age groups do you treat?

Everyone can benefit from acupuncture, and at Magnus Wellness we offer our services to folks of all ages. Children under the age of 18 must receive written consent from their parent or guardian. We will determine if the child under 18 years of age is mature enough to receive a treatment with needles. Asian Bodywork, Pediatric TuiNa is a great alternative to needles for young children.

What should I do while receiving acupuncture?

Relax. There is no need to be scared. Ask ANY questions you have along the way so that you can get the most benefit from your treatment. Try not to change your position dramatically or move suddenly when the needles are in. If you begin to feel uncomfortable in one position let your acupuncturists know so they can help you adjust.

What should I expect after the treatment?

After a treatment, most patients feel very relaxed, and they report sleeping much better. Relaxation is critical to our bodies for general health and well-being, and even more so when the body is trying to heal.

Patients often experience the most dramatic results after their first treatment. For example, with pain conditions, some patients experience an immediate total or partial relief of their pain or other symptoms. This relief may last or some pain may return. In a few cases, there may be no immediate relief only to notice the pain diminish over the next couple of days. In general, you should expect to feel better.

Is there anything I should do after treatment?

We suggest making sure you drink enough water, preferably room temperature, following the treatment. It is also important to be aware of any changes you experience, better or worse, in regard to how you are feeling. This is important as you want to report any changes at your next visit.

Are there any side effects of acupuncture?

Acupuncture is safe and effective, and rarely are there any “side-effects”. At most a small bruise could develop. This may occasionally occur and if you have any concerns, please talk to your practitioner. Cupping will cause painless bruising which typically clears up in 3-10 days.

Is acupuncture effective? Is their a scientific basis for acupuncture?

Acupuncture can be very effective in treating many conditions. Click on the links below to get information on research and acupuncture in the news.

WHO Traditional Medicine

National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health

Scientific research continues to work on understanding the mechanism of acupuncture. Currently researchers have been able to measure activity in specific body systems when an acupuncture needle is inserted, including:

1 An increase in peripheral blood flow,

2 An increase in the neural pain threshold

3 A release of neurochemicals similar to endorphins

4 An increase in T cells and other immune constituents

5 An increased activity at nerve “gates”.

6 Thermal PET scans also show activity in the regions of the brain responsible for “pain” messages.

What do we expect from you?

Please arrive on time to allow yourself an opportunity to relax, or perhaps arrive early and enjoy a cup of tea or glass of water. When you are in the treatment area we ask that you speak in a quiet voice to ensure that everyone is enjoying their experience. Remember to dress in loose fitting clothing – or bring along a pair of shorts to ensure that you are comfortable for your treatment.

We also would like your feedback! Let your acupuncturist know how you are feeling and let all of us know what your experience is like at Magnus Wellness. Okay, and tell your friends and family too!

We ask that if you need to cancel or reschedule that you give us 24 hours notice (see cancellation policy) or if you’re running late to give us a call.

What forms of payment do you accept?

Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted. There is a fee of $30 for returned checks.

What is your cancelation policy?

All appointments that are canceled with less than 24 hours notice, or are missed without notifying our office, will be charged the price of a treatment. Appointments that are rescheduled to a later date with less than 24 hours notice will also be charged the price of a treatment.

Does insurance pay for my treatments?

We are happy to work with your insurance carrier. Please call or email us to provide your information so that we may verify your coverage.

Do you use chinese herbs?

Yes, we do use Chinese (Herbal) Medicinals/Formulas at Magnus Wellness. Depending on the condition you are seeking treatment for; it may be recommended that you try Chinese Formulas. This can enhance the effects of acupuncture, leading to quicker and more dramatic results. For particular conditions such as digestive disorders, infertility, menstrual problems, menopausal symptoms, depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, insomnia, common cold or headaches, Chinese Herbal Medicinals may be recommended.

During your initial acupuncture visit or in follow-up visits we may suggest that you try Chinese Formulas.

Is Chinese Herbal Medicine safe? What about the Chinese (Herbal) Formulas or supplements you may be recommending?

Chinese Herbal Medicinals/Formulas combine synergistically with acupuncture and have been safely used for over 2500 years to accelerate the healing process. The companies we use offer the highest quality ingredients and products are subject to stringent safety testing, they are FDA and GMP compliant. Like acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicinals work best when taken consistently at the recommended dose. Any recommended dietary supplements are based on modern research and we stock only the highest quality brands.

We offer a line of Chinese Herbal Medicinals processed into a powder that is easy to take. Ready made formulas are available in the office and Custom-made formulas are created for you to meet your body’s particular needs and should not cause side effects. Custom-made formulas are prescribed and filled by a local pharmary. These formulas are available for pick or can be delivered to the home or office through the post office or courier service.

Most of the time Chinese Herbal Medicinals can be used alongside western medications; however, there are certain cases when they should not. The utmost care will be used in prescribing Chinese Herbal Medicinals for you. Please make sure to inform your acupuncturist of all medications and supplements you are currently taking.

Are there side effects of Chinese Herbal Medicinals?

Side effects for Chinese Herbal Medicine are minimal for various reasons:

• Formulas are classically derived, proven and tested over thousands of years

• The whole part of a plant is used not just an extract of the active ingredient

• Many Chinese Herbal Medicinals are used together in a formula to enhance or deter characteristics of herbs

• Small (not large) dosages of individual herbs are used

In the case that an individual is using medication prescribed by physician or bought over-the-counter, it is essential to inform your practitioner. Although side effects from drug / herb interaction are minimal, it is essential that the patient state all medication, herbal supplements and vitamins taken.

Are the Chinese Herbal Medicinals good quality?

The herbal products sold at our clinic are of superior quality. We have carefully selected herbs that conform to our stringent standards and the standards of the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) for safety. Formulas are written for your specific condition(s) and are carefully balanced so you will not experience any side effects. In fact, side effects are unusual. However, as with any medication, any unusual symptoms should be reported immediately to your herbalist.
